Becoming a Center for Parent Learning
March 14, 2012 - Chicago, IL
(Posted: Friday, February 10, 2012)
There has never been a more important time to help children become
successful learners and to develop academic and social skills which help
them become learners for life. In addition to offering great learning
opportunities at school, outstanding schools are beginning to see their
role as partnerships with families, offering training in child
development, learning theory, and behavior and social skill development
to maximize learning success for children in their schools and in the
community. Become the center for parent/guardian/grandparent learning
in your community. Schools should consider sending a team of teacher leaders, division
head and/or head of school. Teams could also consider including parent
team members. All grade levels welcome.
Presenter
Bob Sornson, Ph.D., worked as a classroom teacher and school
administrator for over 30 years, and is the founder of the Early
Learning Foundation. Bob is known for his workshops and keynote
presentations on topics including early learning success, and teaching
and parenting with Love and Logic.

Randolph Street. Hotel Reservations

Having Hard Conversations
March 9, 2012
(Posted: Wednesday, February 1, 2012)
Each of us has survived a difficult conversation that did not end well. Administrators in all roles, teachers at all levels and coaches regularly come up against situations where difficult topics must be addressed. With little or no formal training, what do we know about the best strategies for those moments? What questions should we be asking ourselves before we speak and what words should we use (or not use) so the conversation can be as humane, results-oriented and growth producing as possible?
Having Hard Conversations is an interactive workshop and personal approach to mastering the art of challenging conversations. The strategies in the workshop address a wide range of situations, including communications with supervisees, colleagues, supervisors and parents. The workshop helps educators at all levels (administrators, division heads, department chairs, deans, coaches, teachers, committee chairs, etc.) speak with clarity and courage to directly address difficult situations within their schools.
This workshop will be beneficial for all new and experienced educators, leaders, and emerging leaders at all levels.
Presenter
Jennifer Abrams is a national and international educational consultant for public and private schools, charter schools, universities and non-profits. An English teacher for nine years, Ms. Abrams is now in her second decade in education, trains and coaches teachers and administrators on successful teaching practices, new teacher support, supervision and evaluation, generational savvy, having hard conversations and effective collaboration skills.
Location
The workshop will take place in Chicago at the Hotel Allegro, 171 West Randolph Street.
Hotel Reservations
ISACS has secured special discounted room rates at the Hotel Allegro: $159/night plus tax (single or double occupancy).

Solar Eclipse May 20, 2012 - An Opportunity for Schools
(Posted: Tuesday, January 3, 2012)
A message from Doug Duncan, the astronomer who popularized “clickers” and who has spoken at previous ISACS meetings, regarding the upcoming solar eclipse on May 20, 2012:
"I thought I would alert you to a big event that can provide an opportunity for all ISACS schools throughout the mid- and Western US. They could have fun, benefit their communities, get excellent free publicity for the school, and earn quite a bit of money at the same time!
Late Sunday afternoon May 20, 2012, all the middle and western US will see 80 to 90 per cent of the sun covered by the moon in an eclipse, and tens of millions of people will want to watch. I am working with NASA and also on my own to prepare the country for the upcoming eclipse. Two Public Service Videos on how to watch the sun safely are here: http://www.eclipse-watch.com
You can also click here to see how I’m advising schools and clubs to prepare and profit!"

Information about joining the ISACS Division Heads Ning
The ISACS Division Heads Ning (http://isacsasc.ning.com/) has many features including:
A forum to post and respond to questions among ISACS Division Heads. Unlike a listserv, users can choose whether or not to view these posts at their discretion (in other words, your email box will not become cluttered) and can use RSS technology to remain aware of forum topics. The Ning will provide an opportunity to quickly collect data from your peers as you make important curricular decisions in your school.
Current forum topics include:
- What reading assessments do elementary schools use to assess and support readers?
- What technology skills are being built into your elementary curriculum?
- What evaluation process is in use to evaluate teachers? This post actually has documents used by one school. The original poster encourages feedback on those documents.
- What makes you passionate about teaching and being a division head?
The Ning offers the ability to post articles, documents, photos, and videos that you find interesting. Current documents include presentations from Pat Bassett and Patti Crane from the ISACS Academy for Division Heads in February 2010.
To view these materials visit http://isacsasc.ning.com.
If you are interested in joining this network, click on "Sign Up" and fill out the requested information. Once you are "approved" you will be granted access to the platform. You will also receive quick instructions on how to use this platform to encourage professional support and collegiality among a group that often feels isolated.
