School Description:

The Leelanau School is a strength-based experiential boarding high school for intelligent boys and girls who simply learn differently, especially those with dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, and similar learning differences. Success sparks a passion for learning. A student's capability in one way of learning affects his attitude toward others. And your student–in fact, every child–owns that potential. At The Leelanau School, on the shores of Lake Michigan, what some call distractibility, we see as overflowing creativity and brain power. Our campus, in the middle of Sleeping Bear Dunes' National Lakeshore, is home for high school students from all over the world who simply learn differently. You've seen and heard the labels: ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, disinterested, intellectually frustrated. Where others simply see labels, we see dynamic students with strengths that are simply looking for a context to be expressed. That context is The Leelanau School and the antidote for these labels is experiential multisensory learning and relationships with understanding adult mentors and empathetic schoolmates. There is no second row at The Leelanau School; in fact, there often is no row at all! Field trips providing hands-on experience are more of the norm than the exception. Classes are typically no bigger than six students. So the next time your son or daughter's creative and powerful brain races past a point traditional education has yet to figure out, remember The Leelanau School is here, not with more labels, but with rich experiences and real relationships, both academic and social.
