School Description:
The Laboratory Schools, established by John Dewey as a laboratory for curricular development and teacher training, are part of the University of Chicago.  Approximately half of the pupils are children of university faculty and staff members while the rest of the student body comes from all parts of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Graduates continue study at the college level, but, beyond academic preparation for college, the program encourages autonomy in intellectual development and endeavors to provide an environment for healthy personal and social growth.

Students in the lower grades (grades 1 through 4) move gradually away from a homeroom-centered day as world languages are introduced in grade 3 and musical instruments in grade 4.  The high school curriculum includes Advanced Placement and Advanced Topics courses and a variety of quarter-long electives in the English department.  Students may enroll in up to six University of Chicago undergraduate courses at no additional cost.

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors meet with academic advisors twice weekly and most seniors spend the month of May completing an independent project outside the classroom.  Students perform two compulsory quarters of service, usually in grade 10.  During these quarters, the students devote at least one hour a week to service activities outside the classroom.

Wireless internet access is available throughout the campus.
