School Description:

St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf, founded in 1837, is a private school for children with hearing loss, serving children birth through 8th grade. The educational philosophy is listening and spoken language; therefore sign language is not used for instruction. Instead, curriculum is coupled with intensive listening, speech, and language therapy. Students come from across the United States and foreign countries. The goal of St. Joseph Institute is to mainstream students into general education classes when it is developmentally appropriate for each. Mastery of spoken  language will have prepared them for lives in the societal mainstream. St. Joseph Institute accepts children without regard to race, religion or gender. Financial aid is available.
