ISACS is pleased to host Trustee Day on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Cobo Center. Designed as an extension of the ISACS Annual Conference, this will be an energizing and thought-provoking day featuring a series of stimulating presentations and conversations designed specifically for the independent school board member. Included in the registration fee will be two half-day presentations by Caryn Pass and James Honan complemented by the opportunity to join the conference luncheon and hear the keynote presentation by Beverly Daniel Tatum. Trustee Day will be held from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm. There is also a special session for board chairs and heads from 8:15 am – 9:15 am offered at no additional charge.

The program for trustees includes:

8:00 am – 9:15 am: Check in at the registration desk. Online registration if required and must be completed by Wednesday, October 17.

8:15 am – 9:15 am: Special Session  for board chairs and heads: Out the Door: What We Can Learn from Abrupt Departures from Headship with Claudia Daggett, ISACS
In recent years, unplanned departures from headship have spiked significantly. In this session, we will examine this unsettling trend by exploring data, impact, contributing factors, and remedies with a focus on the roles of head and board chair.

9:30 am – 11:30 am: ‚ÄčLegal Trends in Independent School Boards of Trustees with Caryn Pass, Venable, LLC
Legal issues facing independent schools require an increasing amount of time and attention from school administrators as well as trustees. As fiduciaries and trustees of the institution, it is important for board members to keep abreast of the legal issues that could face the school and pose both financial and other burdens on the institution. Independent school lawyer Caryn Pass will discuss a wide range of legal challenges confronting independent schools and pro-active strategies that can limit liability exposure. Student travel, social media, intellectual property, and transgender students and employees will be addressed.

11:45 am – 1:15 pm: Banquet Luncheon featuring presentation by Beverly Daniel Tatum, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria: Where Are We Now?

1:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Better Boards, Better Schools: Challenges & Opportunities with James P. Honan, Harvard Graduate School of Education
This session will examine two inter-related topics: improving board performance and improving school performance. We will examine both goals and identify tools, frameworks, and strategies for making progress.
