Friday, October 13, 2017
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

ISACS Classroom
Chicago, IL

The enormous capacity of the Web provides access to a variety of interesting and compelling media that portray experience, knowledge and the social interaction of people. The Web, along with the technology tools that we have, provide the capacity for creating and sharing media instantly and in a variety of ways. In this workshop, we'll explore the principles of visual literacy as a context for creating media that matters. We?ll examine cutting-edge tools that can be used for capturing, creating, remixing, and sharing media creations and discuss techniques and strategies for using media to communicate with stakeholders. Leave the session with a global yet practical understanding of the principles of creating compelling media, what is available to produce and share media, how this applies to your specific role in education, and how you can get started tomorrow.

During this workshop, participants will:

  • describe brain-based techniques for employing media in messaging and storytelling, explain principles of visual literacy, and evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of media messages
  • apply best practice media techniques for developing compelling media products (presentations, graphics, video, etc.) using cutting-edge tools on a range of devices
  • practice with these tools to create a variety of media products - Explain how to create visual imagery for communicating with social media
  • explain how copyright and fair use applies to the use and distribution of media
  • describe what constitutes an appropriate digital presence for students, professionals, and organizations

This workshop is appropriate for a wide audience that includes teachers, administrators, librarians, and public relations personnel. A goal of the workshop is to develop an understanding of the importance of media from different school roles and perspectives. The prerequisite for participation is simply an interest in media.

Participants will have a deeper understanding of how to communicate with media, be able to design compelling messages and stories based in the research-based principles of visual literacy, and do so with cutting edge digital tools. For those participants that work with students, the content of this workshop is directly transferable to classroom settings and learning experiences that dramatically improve how students create and employ media.

Participants are encouraged to bring their computers, tablets, and smartphones to this workshop.
