We invite all faculty, administrators and trustees to join us at the ISACS Diversity Summit on Friday, February 10 – Saturday, February 11, 2017, as we welcome all who share a commitment to diversity, equity, and justice in our schools. The Summit will provide an opportunity to learn new strategies; understand current research while considering school culture, resources and challenges; and, possible steps for advancing our work in these areas. Participants will be provided time to hear from leading practitioners, learn about specific strategies, connect with other committed educators, celebrate successes, renew commitments, and return to school with informed plans for action. We hope you will join us to share the energy of these essential and energizing conversations.  We look forward to hearing a multitude of voices in this two-day conversation.

On day one, join Rodney Glasgow as he leads us in spirited and thoughtful dialogue about the following compelling topics:
The climate is shifting. How do we respond to the shift while also responding to highly charged incidents around diversity and inclusion in our schools? Hear about trends in schools including an increased use of the N-word and highly politicized talk about citizenship/immigration due to the election debates. More and more voices are feeling silenced by the increased diversity work and are, thus, starting to push schools to scale back on their programming. Learn how to manage the rise of conservative feeling around issues of sexual orientation and gender as our nation takes more steps towards inclusion, especially around transgender rights and in light of Black Lives Matter and other current movements.

Tools will be shared for assessing the school's culture around inclusivity, as well as concrete strategies for creating a safe space in which all community members can thrive.  How can we support the community - students, faculty, staff and parents - in building an inclusive school community? How do we assess or re-assess the school's progress and needs in these areas? How do we respond effectively to incidents of bias and discrimination in the school and each classroom? Should the school take a political stance in larger conversations? How?

Continue the conversation with Kapono Ciotti as he brings a forward-thinking process to develop specific steps to bridge the gap between theory and practice:
Participants will be introduced to the principles of Culturally Responsive Design Thinking and how these principles will be used to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Participants will engage in a World Cafe experience to build shared understanding of the most important “take aways” from the work with Rodney Glasgow and how this knowledge informs our understanding of where we stand with the work of Equity and Justice in our schools.

On day 2, principles of Culturally Responsive Design Thinking will be employed to create an interactive session that leverages participant experiences, new learning, and collaboration to address the complex issues of creating more equitable and socially just schools. The focus on the Empathy and Define phases of Design Thinking will allow participants to think expansively about the application of Friday's learnings, and will then extend to the stages of Ideate, Prototyping, and Testing. Participants will build, test, and get feedback before returning to their schools. This will be a hands-on "building" approach to planning and will engage participants in deeply collaborative and participatory design. Participants will also create peer networks to support the work of Diversity as they enter into long-term school transformation. 

Featured Speakers
Kapono Ciotti
is the head of school at Waialae School in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a school leader and educational consultant, Ciotti’s work centers on the belief that learning is a construction of knowledge and complex understandings, and that teaching is an act of social justice. Through more than a decade of classroom teaching experience, work as a consultant in more than 30 school and school districts, and experience leading educational initiatives as a head of school, he brings a broad perspective on excellent and innovative transformation in education.  Ciotti is a trained design thinking coach and a leader in culturally responsive strategies in design thinking. He has worked with public and private organizations across a variety of professional sectors to leverage design thinking tools to improve practice.  Ciotti is currently a doctoral candidate in Education, holds a masters in social change from the University of Newcastle, Australia and a bachelors in language and cultural studies from The Evergreen State College, Washington.

Rodney Glasgow is a noted speaker, facilitator, trainer and activist in the areas of diversity, equity, and social justice.  He has given keynote presentations, delivered workshops, and offered consultation to schools and organizations nationwide.  He is one of the founding members and now chair of the National Association of Independent School’s (NAIS) annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference, a 20 year-old training ground drawing over 1500 high school students nationwide.  He is a member of Call-to-Action, the advisory board to the vice president of equity and justice for the NAIS.  In 2009, he was given the People of Courage Award by the City of Worcester for his work with the Community Foundation’s LGBT Initiative.  A graduate of Harvard University with a joint degree in Afro-American studies and psychology, and holding a master of arts in organization and leadership from Columbia University, he is also an independent school alum, having graduated from Gilman School. Glasgow has been the diversity coordinator at Graland Country Day School, assistant head of upper school and director of diversity for Worcester Academy, and is currently the head of middle school and chief diversity officer at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Maryland.  Recently, Glasgow founded the National Diversity Directors Institute, an intensive professional development program for diversity practitioners in independent schools and Diversity in the DMV, a one-day conference for students and educators.  For more information, visit http://www.rodneyglasgow.com/about.html

Attendees must make their own hotel reservations. ISACS has secured a discounted room rate at the Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront. We recommend reserving your hotel accommodations early! 

To make a reservation, call 1-800-WYNDHAM (1-800-996-3426) or 312-462-7080 and request the "ISACS Diversity Summit" group rate to receive the discounted rate of $109 per night plus tax (standard king room or a double queen room). Rates are valid for the nights of Thursday, February 9 and Friday, February 10 as well as a week before or after these dates. The discounted rate must be booked by Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

Air Travel
Both Midway and O'Hare airports are easily accessible to the Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront. Fly into Midway (on Southwest Airlines) or into O'Hare and take the "L" (Chicago's public transportation) and be downtown in less than an hour.

ISACS has negotiated a discounted daily parking rate of $28. 

Overnight parking at the hotel is $65/night. The parking rate is subject to change. If you are a hotel guest the overnight parking will be billed to your hotel bill.

​GO Airport Express (Share-a-Ride) Shuttle Service
ISACS has negotiated a special rate with GO Airport Express for ISACS members – 15% off standard rates. Reservations MUST be made in advance and online to receive the discounted rate.  The standard rate per person to/from O’Hare is approximately $28 one-way; $49 round-trip. The standard rate per person to/from Midway is approximately $24 one-way; $40 round-trip.   • First registrant pays full fee, each additional registrant receives a $25 discount.

Registration Confirmation Communications from ISACS
Once registration for the Diversity Summit has been completed the following communications will be sent from ISACS:

  • Once registration is complete, an email will automatically be sent to the contact person on the registration confirming that registration has been completed.
  • Approximately three weeks prior to the Diversity Summit, ISACS will send a confirmation email to the registrant with details for the Summit.
  • Approximately one week prior to the Diversity Summit, ISACS will send a final confirmation email to the registrant with details for the Summit.

If you do not receive these emails prior to arriving at a workshop, please call the ISACS office at 312-750-1190. It is possible your email address was entered incorrectly OR your registration was not completed.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing to ISACS by emailing programinfo@isacs.org 10 business days prior to the event to receive a 50% refund. Cancellations received within 10 days of the event will not receive a refund. Registration may be transferred to another member from the same school. ISACS reserves the right to cancel the workshop for insufficient enrollment. In this case, participants will be notified and given a full refund.
