We are excited to announce that the Trustee Day will be Thursday, November 6, 2014, at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station.  Designed as an extension of the ISACS Annual Conference, trustees can look forward to an energizing and thought-provoking day which will include a series of stimulating presentations and conversations.  Included in the registration fee will presentations by James Honan, Allen Proctor, a copy of Allen’s book, Linking Mission to Money: Finance for Non-Profit Leaders, and the opportunity to join the conference luncheon and hear the keynote presentation by Dale Dougherty. 

Heads may register to join their board members at this day for trustees. Heads interested in hearing James Honan and Allen Proctor will find them presenting within the Annual Conference program on Thursday at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm respectively.

The program will be as follows:

  • 8:15 am – 9:15 am: Registration (Check in to receive your Trustee Day packet.)
  • ‚Äč9:30 am – 11:30 am: Workshop with James P. Honan: Governing Schools of the Future in an Era of Rapid Change
    Join Jim Honan in conversation about the most current issues faced by committed trustees as they lead independent schools.  Learn ways to meet the emerging needs of governing a 21st century school while also maintaining a firm commitment to financial sustainability. Trustees will have the opportunity to share their most pressing concerns/questions prior to this session so that Jim can address these topics during the session.
  • 11:45 am – 1:15 pm: Join the banquet lunch with Keynote Presenter Dale Dougherty
  • 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Workshop with Allen J. Proctor: Silver Bullets That Can Turn to Lead 
    A clear understanding of the business model embraced by sustainable nonprofits shows there are no silver bullets to deliver sustainability.  Beginning with examples of how other nonprofits are building more sustainable business models, this session will examine how some commonly held notions of fiscal responsibility, such as budget balance and building endowment, can harm rather than support the reliability and sustainability of your educational program.

Speaker Bios  (in order of appearance)
James P. Honan, EdM, EdD is a senior lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is also a faculty member at the Harvard Kennedy School and co-chair and senior associate director of the Advanced Leadership Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School as well as educational co-chair of the Institute for Educational Management. Honan has served as a consultant on strategic planning, resource allocation, and performance measurement and management to colleges, universities, schools, foundations, and nonprofit organizations. His areas of interest include financial management of nonprofit and education organizations, strategic planning, organizational performance measurement and management issues, and higher education administration. He is the author of numerous publications. Honan holds a BA from Marist College, an MA from George Washington University, and an EdM and EdD from Harvard University.

Dale Dougherty is the founder & CEO of Maker Media, Inc. Maker Media produces Make Magazine, which laun ched in 2005, and Maker Faire, which was held first in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006. Make has been the catalyst for a worldwide Maker Movement that is transforming innovation in industry, hands-on learning in education, and the personal lives of makers of all ages. Make invites everyone to become a maker and integrate creative goals with technical skills. Dougherty was a co-founder of O’Reilly Media, where he was the first editor of their computing trade books. In 1993 he developed GNN, the first commercial website and also coined Web 2.0. Maker Media started at O’Reilly Media and spun out as its own company in 2013.

Allen J. Proctor, PhD is founder and principal of Proctor’s Linking Mission to Money and President & CEO of the Center for Social Enterprise and Development. He is a columnist on nonprofit management and the author of two books: Linking Mission to Money and More Than Just Money: Practical and Provocative Steps to Nonprofit Success. He has worked at institutions as diverse as Harvard University (CFO and vice president for finance), New York City (deputy budget director), New York State (Financial Control Board executive director), and Federal Reserve Bank of New York (division chief ). He has taught at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. Proctor earned his AB from Harvard University and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Air Transportation
Air travel to Indianapolis can be accessed via the Indianapolis International Airport.

Ground Transportation
Taxis from the airport to the hotel cost approximately $40 one way and take approximately 25 minutes.

Parking Information
Self-parking is available at Pan Am Plaza, located directly across from the hotel: $22 for overnight and $14 for 2-12 hours. Valet parking is available at the hotel: $30 for overnight and $20 for the day. Rates are subject to change.

Registration Information
ISACS will be happy to work with a representative from your school on all issues related to trustee registration.  In order to plan appropriately, trustees must register online prior to the conference. Due to the structure of the day, we can only accept registrations for the full day. Registration for the day will include the workshops led by James P. Honan and Allen J. Proctor, a copy of Allen’s book, and participation in the conference luncheon with a keynote presentation by Dale Dougherty.

Trustees must register by Friday, October 17, 2014. There is no on-site registration.

Registration Fee

  • $200 for Trustees from ISACS member schools 
  • $350 for non member 
  • Registration includes a book by Allen J. Proctor for each trustee and a banquet lunch.
  • There is no on-site registration; register by October 17, 2014 to secure your space.
  • Please note the Trustee Day starts at 9:30 am and ends at 3:30
  • Trustee Day is designed for trustees only. If heads of school would like to hear James P. Honan or Allen J. Proctor, they will each be presenting 75 minute sessions on Thursday as part of the Annual Conference program

Heads of school who register for the Trustee Day and plan to attend Friday at the Annual Conference  must register for Trustee Day and the Friday Annual Conference separately. 

Cancellation Policy
ISACS cannot offer refunds for Trustee Day after Friday, October 17.  Cancellations must be received in writing by Friday, October 17 to receive a 50% refund.  Registration may be transferred to another trustee from the same school until October 17.  To contact ISACS, please email programinfo@isacs.org or call 312-750-1190.
