Founded by W. M. Lewis, Headmaster, Lake Forest Academy under the name of "North Central Academic Association" - 18 member schools.

1924
Name changed to "Private Schools Association of the Central States." Early membership dominated by Boarding and Military Schools. Growth of the Country Day School Movement (1910-1970).

1958
Name changed to "Independent Schools Association of the Central States." Beginning of "The Teachers Council" as a professional arm of ISACS.

1961
Development of mandatory evaluation program - Henderson (Blake), Schwartz (Pembroke CDS), and Seyfert (Milwaukee CDS). 1st part-time Executive Secretary - E. W. "Tuck" Tucker, retired from Kemper Military Academy.

1963
"BULLETIN" began, edited by Bob Reichley, Culver Director of Publications.

1965
The Teachers Council formalized its operations, developed By-laws. Decision to establish C. O. at Culver, Donald Griffin becomes half-time Executive Secretary. The "Culver Era" (1965-1970).

1967
ISACS incorporated not-for-profit in Indiana, boundaries compressed. ISACS "Green Book" (evaluation guide for elementary schools) developed, and revised in 1972.

1969
Merger with Teachers Council to form one ISACS, an association of schools and no longer of individuals, new By-laws, mandate that 1/3 of the Board consist of Heads of schools and 1/3 consist of teachers.

1970
Central Office moved to Avery Coonley School, Terry Taylor hired 3/71

1971
1st full-time President, James Henderson, takes office on 7/1/71.

1977
1st "Evaluation Guide" published.

1982
President Henderson retired, replaced by Thomas Read.

1985
"MAGAZINE" discontinued, office staff restructured, and 1st part-time Director of Professional Development hired, Dr. Sally K. Boese. First Fall Conference to be co-sponsored by ISACS and a state/local association (AIMS, Detroit).

1986
Conclave I convened by ISACS for state/local associations to explore association roles and collaboration (4/86).

1988
1st "Manual for Visiting Team Leaders" published.

1990
ISACS evaluation/accreditation program recognized through the NAIS Umbrella Recognition Program. Conclave II convened by ISACS for state/local associations to review collaborative role of associations in professional development (9/90).

1991
Retirement of President Read announced (effective 6/30/93) and search for successor initiated. Standards of Membership revised, concordance with "Rose Sheet" achieved

Patrick F. Bassett begins term as president.

1994
Development of ISACS Evaluation Manual for School Self-Study. ISACS opens Multicultural Alliance Midwest Office. Development of ISACS school operations statistics.

Development of ISACS Survey. Hiring of Frances Moore-Bond as first ISACS Director of Diversity Services.

1996
Publication of ISACS Evaluation Guide (inclusive of all ISACS evaluation guides and instruments). ISACS establishes presence on the World Wide Web.

Hiring of David Jones as director of Accreditation Services and Peter Hahn, Multicultural Alliance fellow administrative assistant.

1998
Hiring of Monique Williams, Multicultural Alliance fellow, as ISACS Diversity Coordinator and webmaster. NAIS/ISACS Pilot Program on Statistics undertaken.

1999
ISACS spearheads national public opinion survey on independent schools, in collaboration with NAIS and OAIS. ISACS commissions psychometric testing on heads of school and master teachers.

2000
ISACS experiments with outsourcing association management to St. Louis firm after closing of Downer’s Grove office.

2002
ISACS consolidates once again in a central office; inauguration of Leaders and Learners Institute in collaboration with University of Chicago; web page reconstructed and modernized; strategic plan for smaller annual conference is implemented.

2005
Rick Belding begins term as ISACS President.
