I had the good fortune to attend a new, large public high school in central New Jersey in the post Sputnik era when we as a country put incredible resources into our schools. We had the best in science and math, multiple foreign languages and an overall commitment to educate our young people. After graduation from Princeton University, I spent a brief time in the for-profit world, both building new homes and as a management consultant. Some force drew me to teaching, and I was fortunate to find a math position at the Wooster School in Danbury, CT in the winter of 1970-71. It was my first exposure to independent schools, and, in one way or another, most of my professional life has been working in or for independent schools.

I’ve taught math and science in 4 independent schools and 1 public high school; served as a business officer, development officer and head of school; was executive director of Independent Educational Services; was founding executive director of Recruiting New Teachers, a national public service ad campaign and policy organization committed to improving the nation’s teaching force; and was on the staff at NAIS as business officer and liaison to business managers and the School Scholarship Service Committee.

My wife Lucy and I have become very fond of the coast of Maine, where each summer we see a remarkable number of school people. I run for the exercise and time to think, play golf for reasons I don’t understand, have loved cars all my life, and enjoy the sights, food and wine of France and Germany as often as possible.
